Minnesota School of Cosmetology’s (MSC) primary mission is to produce employable graduates into the cosmetology industry. Since we are a career college, our number one goal is for all graduates to be successful in their field!
We were happy to interview our MSC-Woodbury alumni Tawney Gehrke who graduated in 2012. We love hearing graduate success stories!
What was your career path before graduation from Minnesota School of Cosmetology?
After high school, I was very unsure of where my career would begin. There are so many choices out there in the “real world” you want to make sure you are making the right one. I was managing a restaurant wondering if a salon job would make me the same amount of money as the restaurant did.
Why did you choose to attend MSC?
One day I came into MSC as a client for a haircolor. As I watched the girls there, I thought “this place looks so fun, upbeat, and does not feel like school!” Two weeks later I met with admissions and started my journey with MSC.
How did your education enhance or change your current career path?
My education has enhanced my career path and life in general so much. MSC taught me better customer service skills and how to make those customers feel great inside and outside. I realized that I do have a creative side—it may not be drawing or painting, but coloring hair and haircuts. My current career is moving so fast; in less than two years I was a manager in training at my salon! The doors are endless and just keep opening up for me.
What piece of advice would you give to students considering a career in cosmetology?
Keep your heads in the books and keep a smile on your face. Do not get caught up in the drama in school or in your salon. It is not worth it, and it is a complete waste of time. Have fun at what you’re doing! If you are having fun at work, it’s not really work. Push yourselves past your limits! Make new goals every day and achieve them. You will move so fast in school and your future companies! Last, don’t ever be afraid of trying new things in your field—test it all out!
What do you enjoy about the cosmetology industry?
I really enjoy the variety. I work in a company that does haircuts, perms and styles, and I love it. However, I am also going to be working part time at a salon only offering waxing. I love that I can offer so many different services. I also love meeting new people every day and hearing their stories. I have built a huge clientele in my salon; I love seeing them every three to four weeks.
How has your education at MSC impacted your professional life?
My education has impacted everything in my professional life. When people ask me what I do for a living and I tell them cosmetology, they stop and ask me a million questions. The cool thing is that I can actually give them honest answers. I have grown to be a successful person I never thought I could ever be. As the instructors taught in school, I always look professional and have a strong confidence in educating my clients on products that can enhance their hair and skin.
