  • Consult with clients on skin care techniques and products
  • Apply a variety of facial treatments

What are Hair Removal Services?

One of the primary roles of estheticians is to provide hair removal for their clients. The hair removal industry has continued to expand, as new and innovative treatments become more widely available. Hair removal is one of the main reasons why clients visit a day spa or salon. Unsightly, dark, thick facial hair can be troublesome for many people, specifically women. This hair growth can cause a client’s self-esteem to drop exponentially, causing stagnation in a client’s own personal growth, career mobility, and social interactions.

What are the Different Types of Hair Removal?

Fortunately, the field of hair removal has grown by leaps and bounds over the last several decades. Because clients can present with a variety of hair growth concerns, there are many options. It is up to you to identify the right option that is best for a client’s specific needs. Following, are several of the most common hair removal services that you can offer your clients, as well as the pros and cons of each method.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is one of the most used types of hair removal available at spas and clinics. It involves the use of laser lights to target and destroy the hair follicles, one at a time. This process typically takes less than sixty minutes per session. However, it may take longer depending on the area covered. Laser hair removal can be permanent if clients receive multiple treatments, with six weeks between sessions.

The pros of laser hair removal include offering a permanent solution for unwanted hair growth, if follow up appointments are attended regularly. It is also relatively painless and can be used on any area of the body. A draw back of laser hair removal can be the cost, depending on the area being treated.

Waxing is one of the oldest methods utilized for the removal of unwanted hair. Waxing involves a process of heated wax firmly applied to the area with unwanted hair growth. The wax is then smoothed against the skin and quickly pulled, with the unwanted hair pulled out at the root. The results of waxing can be effective, with results lasting anywhere between three to six weeks. Efficacy of this method can be dependent upon the skill level of the esthetician, as well as how coarse or thick the client’s hair is. In terms of cost, waxing can be relatively inexpensive.

Waxing can cause skin irritation in those with highly sensitive skin, however, there are waxes available on the market that are made specifically for those with skin sensitivities. Waxing is one of the most popular hair removal methods due to its relative ease of use, speed of sessions, and fantastic results. The main drawback with waxing is that some regrowth must occur prior to each waxing session. The amount of regrowth necessary for a session is around a quarter of an inch to a half inch. This may be bothersome to some clients, as it can be noticeable when out in public.

Sugaring has often been compared to waxing, however, there are some differences between the two treatments. Sugaring involves the use of a paste mixture which is warmed up and applied to quickly pull the hair follicle from its root, leaving soft, smooth skin. The paste consists of a mixture of lemon, sugar, and water, and is applied by a professional esthetician while it is warm and pliable. For eco-conscientious clients, sugaring may be preferred, as it is considered one of the most environmentally friendly hair removal processes on the market.

There are a few pros to sugaring versus waxing. With sugaring, the hair is pulled in the same direction that it grows, which causes less breakage and provides for longer lasting results than waxing. It also causes less irritation for those with sensitive skin.

While threading is a relatively new process for western based spas and clinics, it is an older practice of hair removal which originates from India and other Asian countries. Threading involves the use of rubbing a thin cotton strong along both edges of a hair follicle while wrapping it in a twisting motion, causing the follicle to fall out by the root. Many estheticians can practice this hair removal technique at a rapid pace, thus minimizing any pain or discomfort felt by the client. This process also produces instant results, with regrowth minimized for up to three or four weeks. Slight redness is common immediately after the treatment, however, disappears within fifteen to thirty minutes.

Threading is most often utilized on smaller areas, such as the eyebrows, upper lip, and chin, however, it can also be used on larger areas of the body, including arms and legs. Clients who are on medications may choose threading since it is much less abrasive on the skin, compared to other hair removal treatments. The demand for highly skilled estheticians who are trained to perform threading techniques is projected to grow, as more clients opt for this quick and efficient hair removal method.
