Pampering Our Elders: Cosmetology Students Visit Senior Living Center
Posted by Staff Writer on December 13, 2013
Every six weeks, enthusiastic Minnesota School of Cosmetology students travel to Oak Meadows Senior Living in Oakdale, Minn., to give the residents manicures and enjoy friendly conversation.
“Oh my, the ladies loved having the girls here! They have been asking me when they are going to come back,” Megan Longville, activities director at Oak Meadows said. “One lady in particular was so happy to have her nails done. She said her nails hadn’t been painted in 20 years!”
Irma Zarate, student at Minnesota School of Cosmetology, appreciates the opportunity to visit with the elderly and pamper them at the same time.
“Going to Oak Meadows is a great experience because I like helping the ladies and hearing the stories about their lives. It is very touching,” Zarate said.
Conversing with people of a different generation and learning about the past while providing a pampering service and practicing for their future profession is a valuable experience for our students.
