’90s Dance Party: Cosmetology Students, Grads Show Off Their Skills

Current students and graduates of Minnesota School of Cosmetology (MSC) joined together to do hair/makeup and model for a “’90s Dance Party” fashion show at Amsterdam Bar and Hall. This event was one of many Salon Industry Nights (SIN) hosted by Euphoria Salon owner, Stevie Rangel.

Jo Pray, MSC graduate and owner/stylist at Norwest Stylists, organized a fashion cameo, which included the likes of Madonna, PINK, Spice Girls, Gwen Stefani and Mariah Carey. Jo stated that these gatherings are “open to cosmetology students, salon owners and licensed cosmetologists wanting to showcase their work and provide an opportunity to promote and network within the local cosmetology industry.”

Jo organizes these types of exciting fashion shows on a regular basis. Other fashion show themes have included Celebrity Look-Alike, Masquerade Ball, Cirque Soliel, and Mermaids. Jo has retained her roots to MSC and recently represented her salon at the MSC Career Fair. Leading by example, she wanted the students to know that “it’s never too late to start something new or make a career change.”

She said she was interested in participating in the career fair to invite the students to visit her salon and teach them “what employers look for in a new employee: dependability, enthusiasm, and personal achievements.” Her salon, Norwest Stylists, is a full service beauty salon that has been a part of the downtown St. Paul community for more than years.

By participating in these types of events, MSC students and graduates learn that the cosmetology industry is a small, close-knit industry. Stevie Rangel, owner and stylist at Euphoria Salon is also the DJ who enjoyed spinning ’90s music throughout the evening. Stevie is an active industry partner with MSC who provides hair-cutting demonstrations for the students, participates in the school’s annual advisory board, and attends career fairs and master panels to teach the students the tips and tricks of the cosmetology industry. He has also hired an MSC graduate as an apprentice in his salon and invites MSC students and graduates alike to volunteer at his annual Breast Cancer Cut-a-Thon held at Euphoria Salon.

Minnesota School of Cosmetology is committed to promoting these types of community events to give back and also offer our students and graduates essential networking experience in the industry.
