Each year, the Minnesota School of Cosmetology closes the school for a day and participates in an organized volunteer opportunity. For our 2016 annual community service project on Friday June 17, 2016, MSC-Woodbury staff members volunteered at Tubman in Maplewood.
Throughout the Twin Cities, Tubman provides safe shelter, legal services, mental and chemical health counseling, elder abuse resources, youth programming and community education. Tubman is the state’s largest provider of domestic violence services, with over 20 percent of all Minnesota shelter beds for women and children experiencing family violence.
Twelve Minnesota School of Cosmetology volunteers organized Tubman’s clothing store called Harriet’s Closet, sorted clothes, and created clothing and accessory displays. They also packed baby wipes and other personal care items for clients of the Tubman Center, and transported school supplies to the shelter and other areas of the building.
“Volunteering for the Tubman Center was amazing. I feel like we really made a difference and a lot of people will be helped due to the work that we did,” Sonya Stelmachuk, Admissions Representative at Minnesota School of Cosmetology, said.
“Thank you for all your help! We really couldn’t do it without community support and volunteers like you! We were happy to help this amazing organization!” an administrator at Tubman said.
