MSC – Woodbury Staff Volunteer at Tubman Center

Each year, the Minnesota School of Cosmetology closes the school for a day and participates in an organized volunteer opportunity. For our 2016 annual community service project on Friday June 17, 2016, MSC-Woodbury staff members volunteered at Tubman in Maplewood.

Throughout the Twin Cities, Tubman provides safe shelter, ComServicelegal services, mental and chemical health counseling, elder abuse resources, youth programming and community education. Tubman is the state’s largest provider of domestic violence services, with over 20 percent of all Minnesota shelter beds for women and children experiencing family violence.

Twelve Minnesota School of Cosmetology volunteers organized Tubman’s clothing store called Harriet’s Closet, sorted clothes, and created clothing and accessory displays. They also packed baby wipes and other personal care items for clients of the Tubman Center, and transported school supplies to the shelter and other areas of the building.

“Volunteering for the Tubman Center was amazing. I feel like we really made a difference and a lot of people will be helped due to the work that we did,” Sonya Stelmachuk, Admissions Representative at Minnesota School of Cosmetology, said.

“Thank you for all your help! We really couldn’t do it without community support and volunteers like you! We were happy to help this amazing organization!” an administrator at Tubman said.

MSC Students Treat Adults with Disabilities to a Day of Beauty

hairstyleRecently, 10 students at Minnesota School of Cosmetology (MSC) in Woodbury enjoyed doing haircuts, hairstyles, and manicures for a group of adults with disabilities. The clients are part of BRIDGE, a non-profit organization in Hudson, Wisconsin providing community-based life skills training, employment services and social and recreational programs for youth and adults with disabilities.

MSC Student Erin Riley was very touched by the kindness and appreciation her client showed while having her service done. Erin said it made her week to pamper such a sweet and considerate lady who rarely gets pampered at a salon.

Jill Hilliard, a volunteer at BRIDGE who helped organize the day of beauty, was overjoyed by the kindness from the MSC staff and students.

“I just had to thank you again for a wonderful afternoon. All of the BRIDGE clients had an absolutely fabulous time at the salon today. And every stylist was exceptional! They were so professional, kind and courteous,” she said. “Every time I walked by one of the clients, they were smiling or laughing or flat out giggling! What a truly fantastic day. Thank you so much for setting this up for BRIDGE.”

MSC students and staff members were happy to brighten the day for this fantastic group of caring and hardworking adults!

MSC Rings the Bell for Salvation Army

On Tuesday, December 15 from 10am to 8pm, 12 Minnesota School of Cosmetology-Woodbury students and staff members rang the Salvation Army bell outside the Key’s Café entrance at the Valley Creek Mall in Woodbury. We are thrilled to participate in this event as a team during the holiday season!

Jessica Lebens, Special Projects Manager of the Salvation Army Northern Division noted:

We are able to do so much GOOD in our communities because of our bell ringers. Our bell ringers average around $30/hour which is enough to:

  • Buy a week’s worth of groceries for someone
  • Shelter a homeless person for one night
  • Buy new coats for two children

FamilyTo add to the excitement of raising money for those in need, one of our staff members was recognized as the “Bell Ringer of the Day!” Lindsay Cooley, Education Coordinator at the Minnesota School of Cosmetology in Woodbury was highlighted on KOOL 108 on the morning we rang the bell.

When asked why she decided to ring the bell Lindsay said, “It feels so wonderful to help the community and change lives.  It’s very rewarding to see people donating money to the Salvation Army!” She explained the best part of being a bell ringer is knowing she is helping change lives and making a difference. Plus it’s fun and the sound of the Salvation Army bell always makes her happy. Next year Lindsay hopes to have her children (Talon, Ayla and Brecken) ring the bell with her and make it a family tradition.

Happy Holidays from all of us at MSC!

MSC-Woodbury Supports Tubman Crisis Center

Since October was National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Minnesota School of Cosmetology students and staff decided to raise money for a local organization called Tubman. This amazing organization helps women, men, youth and families who have experienced relationship violence, elder abuse, addiction, sexual exploitation or other forms of trauma.

IMG_3253We proudly wore purple to let it be known that we won’t stand for domestic violence. By charging money to wear jeans, we were able to donate all proceeds to Tubman Family Crisis and Support Services. “Thanks so much for your ongoing support to our families,” said Joanne Rice, Shelter Manager at Tubman.

We also offered free salon services for the clients of Tubman. MSC-Woodbury graduate Shela Vang said “My experience with the Tubman ladies was great! I enjoyed it not just because we’re giving out free services, but I was able to touch someone’s heart. Being able to make people feel and look good is all I care about! As long as I know they’re happy with my service then I’m happy too.”

MSC-Woodbury student Krystal Shake was happy to give complimentary manicures because she could tell the women were really appreciative. In the past, Krystal volunteered at Tubman taking care of kids which she said was really fun.

If you are interested in volunteering at Tubman, please check out their website.

MSC Participates in a Food Drive to Benefit Local Families

During the month of October, Minnesota School of Cosmetology participated in a food drive. Both our Woodbury and Plymouth locations took part. For every 5 items that were donated customers received $10 off of a service, packages excluded.

Our Woodbury location is donating the items they receive to Christian Cupboard at Woodbury Lutheran Church. The Christian Cupboard Emergency Food Shelf (CCEFS) provides help for those in need in the Woodbury community. There are times in life such as a job loss or illness that puts you in a situation that you need help. Our goal is to provide food for those families in this type of transitional need.

Our Plymouth location is donating the items they receive to Interfaith Outreach and Community Partners (IOCP). Interfaith Outreach and Community Partners is staffed by 880 community volunteers. The food shelf distributed 909,453 pounds of food in 2014-15. The food shelf is available to people living in the service area.

“We have had a great turn out this month for our food drive between student and client donations!” explained Afton Starr, Front Desk Manager.

We have posted signage on our entrance door as well as advertised the food drive on our Facebook page and website.

MSC Staff Selected for State Board Committee

After submitting applications to be a part of the Minnesota Theory/State Exam Subject Matter Expert (SME) Committee, both school manager Josh Luhmann-Woodbury and instructor Irene Grossklaus from our Woodbury Campus were selected to participate in the committee.

Josh will be reviewing the school manager, salon manager, and instructor exams and Irene will be reviewing the general cosmetology exam. The focus of the committee will be to review the state board exam content outline, and define the acceptable level of competence required by a new licensee to correctly practice in the field. The team will be especially
focusing on skills and abilities that a competent Cosmetologist, Esthetician, and Nail Technician must demonstrate.

Having our instructors be a part of this integral process will give us a better understanding as to what is all encompassed in the state board testing, how it will be changing and overall how we can prepare our current students to pass their general exam and graduates to help them continue on their journey to become managers in the future.

Congratulations to Josh and Irene for going above and beyond to setting the bar high for MSC!

Minnesota School of Cosmetology to Style Hair and Makeup at Shriners Hospital Prom

Students and graduates volunteer to help nearly 50 young patients look and feel their best at annual event

Two dozen Minnesota School of Cosmetology (MSC) students and graduates will volunteer to do the hair and makeup for nearly 50 attendees at the Shriners Hospitals for Children – Twin Cities® Prom on Saturday, April 11 at the Minnesota Masonic Home in Bloomington, Minn. The annual event is a special night for young patients who are being treated for orthopaedic and neuromusculoskeletal conditions. This is the fifth year MSC has participated.

“We always look forward to enhancing the prom experience for these young people each year,” says Jill Hocking, campus director at Minnesota School of Cosmetology-Woodbury. “We love making them feel glamorous and seeing the confidence it give them. Our students say it’s something they will always remember being a part of.”

MSC recently announced the latest prom beauty trends, which include pastel colors, long beach waves and loose updos. Students plan to incorporate these styles into the hair and makeup looks for the Shriners Prom-goers this year.

“Shriners Hospitals for Children’s Prom would not be as special as it is without the support of students and staff from Minnesota School of Cosmetology,” says Lauren Elm, director of public and community relations for Shriners Hospital for Children® – Twin Cities. “We can’t thank the Minnesota School of Cosmetology enough for their partnership over the last five years. The students use their talents to make our prom attendees feel beautiful inside and out, which is exactly what we hope for.”

Minnesota School of Cosmetology will style hair and makeup for prom attendees from 1-5 p.m. at the Minnesota Masonic Home, located at 11501 Masonic Home Drive, Bloomington, MN 55437.
