Giving Back to Local Families

In honor of Mother’s Day and to serve a female population that is often overlooked, students at Minnesota School of Cosmetology – Woodbury voluntarily gave haircuts, styles and manicures to residents of Tubman, a local family crisis center.

According to their website, Tubman helps women, men, youth and families who have experienced relationship violence, elder abuse, addiction, sexual exploitation or other forms of trauma. Throughout the Twin Cities, Tubman provides safe shelter, legal services, mental and chemical health counseling, elder abuse resources, youth programming and community education, including public information campaigns to provide community members the information and support they need to get help or give help.

The Minnesota School of Cosmetology staff and students felt this volunteer event was definitely a success, as did the residents and Tubman staff. “It went beautifully! Everyone was very nice and accommodating. The staff and students there were amazing and did a great job, especially with the two youth who came along,” said Niki Robinson, Family & Youth Advocate at Tubman. “Thank you again for your services and support of our clients.”

Tubman is an essential program in our community and the Minnesota School of Cosmetology was happy to help their residents feel beautiful. If you are seeking support, domestic violence resources or safety planning, or know someone that is, please call Tubman at 612.825.0000.

Instructor Spotlight: Irene Grossklaus

One of the many reasons that Minnesota School of Cosmetology (MSC) stands out from the rest is the amazing instructors we have on campus. We’ll introduce you to one of them here. Drumroll please! Say hello to Irene Grossklaus!

What made you decide to start a career in the cosmetology industry?

I’m pretty sure I knew I would do hair from the first time I put “Sun In” in my hair! When I was 9 or 10 years old, my best friend’s mom allowed us to give her a perm!

What was your career path before teaching at the Minnesota School of Cosmetology?

I’m going on my 10th year of teaching now, but before I came to MSC I was an educator at another cosmetology school.

Why did you choose to teach at MSC?

The moment I walked in for my interview I knew this is where I wanted to be. The busy clinic floor, the warm welcoming atmosphere…I knew it would be a place I would really be able to share my experience and change lives.

Describe your role as an educator.

My role entails a bit of everything. It’s what I love the most. Every day brings something new and exciting. One day it might be on the clinic floor interacting hands-on with students and clients, the next time I might be in the basics classroom teaching how to cut hair for the first time. I am a mentor, a guidance counselor, and sometimes my motherly self comes out as well! At the end of the day, as long as someone can take away something I taught them, my day is fulfilled.

What’s your favorite part about being an instructor at MSC?

It’s hard to pinpoint my favorite part about being an instructor. But if I could narrow it down, it would be that I truly enjoy being a part of these students’ journey to being a successful cosmetologist. I know that when they graduate, I have had the opportunity to impact their lives in some way.

What piece of advice would you give to students considering a career in cosmetology?

Don’t give up. Believe in yourself. Continue to grow and learn every day because your opportunities and experiences are limitless. Keep your mind open to what this industry has to offer.

What’s your area of expertise or your favorite technique to teach?

I would say my favorite subject to teach is color. I love the challenges and creativity that coloring someone’s hair can bring, and love seeing the moment in a student’s face when they understand it!

Minnesota School of Cosmetology and Twin Cities Live Partner to Pamper Young Girl Looking for Permanent Home

Minnesota School of Cosmetology-Plymouth’s salon floor was buzzing with its usual load of clients on Thursday, May 7, but there was extra excitement on this particular day because a crew from Twin Cities Live was on its way to the campus.

The local lifestyle show recently partnered with MN Adopt for a weekly segment called “Kid Connection,” which shines a spotlight on children who are looking for permanent homes. In Minnesota alone, there are currently 600 school-aged kids who are living in foster care. One of those kids is 13-year-old Chanel, who loves giving makeovers. Twin Cities Live asked the students at Minnesota School of Cosmetology (MSC) to help give Chanel a fun experience by treating her to her own day of pampering.

“A makeover can change your whole attitude and make you feel really good,” explained Amos Thomsen, school manager at Minnesota School of Cosmetology. “We’re excited to be able to do this for Chanel.”

Upon Chanel’s arrival at Minnesota School of Cosmetology, Twin Cities Live reporter Kelli Hanson sat down to get to know her a little better. In addition to her love for fashion, Chanel said has a passion for drawing and wants to go to school to become an artist. That creativity was reflected in her new look, which included bright colors and unique styles.

To begin, MSC student Marquitta Woods gave Chanel a shorter, edgier haircut and used a flat iron to style it similar to a photo Chanel had shown her. Per Chanel’s request, Marquitta finished by giving her red tips using temporary hair chalk.

For her makeup, student Reca Reeves gave Chanel a fresh, natural look, using a pink gloss on her lips. Finally, Chanel’s spa treatment wasn’t complete without a manicure and pedicure. Yameika Gilleylen and Sheyen Vang applied the purple and lime green polish Chanel chose for her nails and added flower decals to her toes.

After taking a group photo with her stylists, Chanel left the salon with a new look, a few new beauty products and a boost of confidence.

“You look like you’re ready to walk the runway!” said Chanel’s social worker.
